Japanese Geek Mecca

Apprently amongst the new developments in Akihabara (Electric Town) in tokyo, are these Cos-Play Cafes. Its seems that since Akihabara being a geek/Otaku central, the resturants and cafes in the area have begon using cos-plat waitresses in the likes of Maids, nurses and other uniformed characters. This article also talks about many other forms of entertainment, that is NOT in Akihabara and how these cafes' are not sex services.

Spiderman 2

First off, i'm listening to Vindicated by Dashboard Confessionals. One of the 2 songs form the OST that they actually used in the movie... and only in the credits.

To sum up this movie, i can say it is a good movie, well done and very entertaining... but it breaks no grounds. Thus in lies my problem. I guess i should first state that my judgements on movies are usually based on my expectations. So long ago at the first spiderman 2 trailers i was barely impress and expected an entertaining movie such as spiderman 1. Then i "aquired" the Spiderman 2 OST, and heard Vindicated. I think the song and lyrics elevated my hopes for this movie and i really wanted to see it, thus my midnight viewing. The song gave a lot of hope to the movie, it built up my imaginations of what this movie could of been, the possibilites. And when i saw it, it wasnt there.

All that aside, the movie its self is great. Action sequences are much better then the first movie. Spiderman is definetly a very witty fighter. Not martial-artsy but very agile and creative. Which make this 1 on 1 battles vs. Dr. Octopus very cool. Effects and stuff are also pretty seamless, Dr. Octo's arms looks great and spidy looks well blended with his enviroment. No complaints there. Music was boring in the form of 2 danny elfman tracks.. and thats about it. An enitre OST of good music, not one made it INTO the movie. But i can overlook that, as the story was what i was looking for. But that really was were it lost me.

With the song "vindicated" I expected a lot. I wanted to see character drama, in the level of this song. I wanted to see scenes that would of made me go "wow!, that was neat and multi-leved". I wanted beats that allowed me to go that last scene was amazing. The non-verbal comm. the symbolism, the undertones, the hidden messages, the un-spoken depth and conflict of each charcter. But there were none. I felt i was slapped in the face with a story in its out-of-the fridge form, hard and cold. Well i was hoping for a warmer version thats more lumpy and malliable, even with room for me to imagine parts of it. The movie explained everything showed everything, told u everything, and then handed it to u present nicely with a flower. It wasnt as bad as, "My left jacket pocket..." crap, but it was pretty much shoved in my face. I felt excited but sad.

That said, i think overall that the movie is very well made. Best i can say it as is that Raimi hit the bar, but the bar wasnt very high. The pacing was pretty much in the mood of bam, bam, and bam. Where Raimi just kept force feeding u Stan Lees doctrine. I mean sure i adfmit, i think the whole Stan lee words of wisdom is a little hard to accept, but really if i was left some room to think about it i might like them. But no, Raimi gave it to me in the face. There was just one too many scene that was almost painful to watch. A lot of the Peter/Mary jane scenes were kinda of painful to watch. Sure i can say that there suppose to be drama there. But i think, Raimi, again, weilded the drama like a warhammer.

As i'm listneing to Vindicated, i heard the the chorus, "I am Vindicated, I am selfish, I am wrong, I am right, I swear I'm right, I swear I knew it all along. And I am flawed, But I am cleaning up so well, I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself." I wanted a growing character. I wanted Parker to go through stages, i wanted see Mary jane grow from the girl next door that wants to be a model into something else. Not because they have to face villans, but i wanted to see changes, i want to feel that i grew with these characters in the last two movies. U know like good characters should. That when u leave a story, i want to wonder what will happen to them. I can say that this wasnt really there. Peter responded to his usuall Marvel-esque Stan Lee conflict, and Mary Jane? well she... things happened in her life and she deals with it. Maybe one of more liked characters is Harry Osborn. I think with the scenes and the drama he had, Raimi actually left a lot of room for him, that u can imagine. Of course a big setup for Spiderman 3.

Over all i think this is a very good movie. Again, i think its well made. Raimi does a good job of doing what he wanted to do, a Raimi film, with good action and more budget then his older stuff. It is Very entertaining, lots of cool action scenes, good effects, romance, drama (at the Marvel level) and humor. Fun to watch and very very, summer block-buster feel. Like that line from Ebert, its a movie for non-superhero movie watchers. Cause in the end, its a moive for the masses. I have a swinging opinion of movies, mostly based on expectation, which is why i like some crappy movies sometimes. In the end, i think i gave this movie too high of an expectation. I should of went in with a mindset of a summer blockbuster, and not the visuals to go with "Vindicated".

The New Induce Act

Obiviously this is this news is on the top of all BLOGs, news sites and music lover communities a like. I've not read this act, but from aevery summary i read it seems that with this act, the RIAA can sue people who "encourages" the illegal sharing of music. Thus the free-music loving people of net fear that people like Apple, who make the iPods, can get sued because they make a device that easily lets u store a lot of "possible" illegal music, because simply, they are inducing us with their convient tech. This is one of the summaries:

The 'Induce Act'. will make the 'intentional inducement of copyright infringement' an offense, and this will extend liability to any manufacturer of a device which plays infringed material, or a shop that sells such a device.

There's obiviously a lot of coverage on this, but the most catchy one i read so far is form the register with this nice intro paragraph:

It may soon be possible to carry around an AK-47 assault rifle and an iPod with you down the street - and be arrested for carrying the iPod.

Of course the RIAA says this bill isnt meant to target people like Apple, but rather the P2P networks. But most online writers beleive it odes open the door to suits against manufactures of MP3 players.

New Antenna Designs

Apprently NASA did some research and came up with a new antenna design. I honestly cant say i understadn the technology behind it, but its based on some sort of Algorithm:

Using a coevolutionary algorithm, we optimized the design parameters for a quadrifilar helical antenna by encoding various parameters that control the shape and size of the antenna into a linear representation.

all this with the top 3 benefits of, 1. Less power comsumption, 2. doesn't require a matching network (not sure what this means...), 3. Has a more uniformed coverage. Not to mention its easier to design, and has taken the idea of being used near building, which current day antenna tech. inst really designed for, building obstacles.

I love my Sprint

Well Sprint annouces that they will be making a move to the EV-DO tech, the true speed of 3G cell technology at the end of this year in selected markets. This will mean up to speeds of 2.4 Mbps, with an average download speeds of 300-500 Kbps, and an upload speed of 144 kbps.

So this article spectulate the use of the Treo series in Sprints advertisements. And questions the current cool deal of $10 unlimited internet use.

Apprently the fear of our satellite communication network going down in the event of nuclear happening in space. We need to sheild our satellites. Apprently this can be done now days. But since our communication network is baed on old a$$ satellites, we have to figure out a way to protect the old ones. Like saving all the old folks incase of a fire. So Darpa and NASA came up with this:

One idea is to use '"electrodynamic-static space tethers' that would remove highly charged radiation particles." And no, as Dave Barry would say, I am not making this up.

"The tethers would be carried by satellites in low Earth orbit and cut across magnetic field lines, inducing electromagnetic current that would dilute the nuclear radiation and push it away from satellites, a government official said.

All i can say is, have we seen The Day after Tomorrow or that "great" movie The Core? Werent all these catastrophies the result of some science experiment with the magnetic fields?? Well good to know that we are actually doing this stuff, and not just another case of Hollywood lying to us about Tech.

Info-MICAs

Well Japan is at it again. In the future wave of storage mediums, NTT has created the newest storage medium, the Info-MICAs. The current design model is about the size of a postage stamp and hodls 1 gig of info. How does this work? this is what i got. Apprently they encode holograms of patterns onto layers of thin-film. And it is a stack in layers. The benefit being, 1. no high-powered laser and spinning, 2. low power consumption, 3. Large data storage for cheap. 4. u can duplicate the content easily. and 5. u cannot copy it from home. This is the dream of RIAA i think, specially since they r trying everything to sue u.

So this thing can be produced for the cost of making CDs. Obivously this sint flash ROM< it isnt writeable so it wont replace SD of CF cards. So the concept is that it might replace CDs and DVDs one day, as it is working its way up to 10 Gb.

The good thing is this is close to what the Sci-Fi films always refer to as a data-cube. Data can be stored in massive layers of some sort of cyrstal (thin-film). And it can be read with a relatively low powered light that doesnt need to be "always-on" like CDs.

So um, yes there will be no comdex this year. According to this post at BoingBoing.net (Link). Also Lollapalooza is canceled. So what is a Tech Savy music lover to do this year?

According to the press release, the new company that took over the Comdex brand name, MediaLive, says that they want to re-evaluate the purpose of Comdex and its invovlvement in the IT industry. I mean theres more beyond giving out bags of free toy and T-shirts?? Not sure if this mean anything. Bad IT economy? IT reform? or just that MediaLive need better structure. Who knows, but this feels dramatic for some reason.

HandTops

So back in the mid 90s, oblivious to most of the American culture was a series of computers smaller then laptops call palmtops. I guess these were the forefathers of Palm and some sort of super translation computer, that gave its user limited laptop capabilities all in the size of a small book. Then we got the PDAs, small palm size devices that can almost take out laptops. Of course they dont...

Now today we have these new brand of computer range, called i think, Handtops. Not sure if this is the offical title, but it sounds about right. THese are devices bigger then the PDAs, aruond palmtop range, that run, WinXP in its fullest. Here's links to two of the more popular up and coming Hand Tops. This and a little Pick and Drop action can make any cafe a virtual exchange of knowledge.

The number of people worldwide vulnerable to a devastating flood is expected to mushroom to 2 billion by 2050 due to climate change, deforestation, rising sea levels and population growth in flood-prone lands, warn experts at the United Nations University.

They do say its probably will be the most dramatic in Asian countries. Dont know mayeb the "Day After tomorrow" was onto something...

Chronicles of Riddick

I just saw The Chronicles of Riddick tonight at a 12am showing of it. I must saw i was surprised. Expecting it to be another scifi film, with about the same feeling as i walked into Pitch Black, and again, this movie seems to be much better then anticpated.

David Twohy, again pulls this one out. With the production designer from Stargate.. this movie is visually awsome. Usually i'm not a fan of the undead or the gothic, or even the whole stargate look. But there are elements of this movie that gave it a rich background. Designs in this movie made the whole Necromongers look like, well an army with a cause. Not goth loving military, but an army with a history, a background, a faith. And ships... that seem to be flying by sucking the dark energy from the surrounding area. The had statues of, what i guess are heroes, or even gods. Not that it really matters, but they really added to the scene.

Character wise, it was pretty much on the level of Pitch Black. I assumed in a new movie, Riddick would be i dfferent. But really, he still is the same bad guy that we came to love. THey dont give him any new glorious divine path, no mission of goodness, it just him again, in a world. He does what he does, and thats pretty much his character. Now we throw in everyone else. Newton, Dench, even rohan's top guy, Karl Urban to place a well very nice bad groupie that has his own conflicts. While Thandie Newtons plays the ploting wife. Nice levels of intrique, whilest the rest of the movie moves on. While on the weaker end is Colm Feore. I dont think he was that strong of a bad guy. I mean he wasnt bad. But he wasnt the single figure of evil. I guess since Riddick is there, u cant really say evil lord is the main bad guy... And Dench, interesting, but almost underused, or even... not needed. But her presence is very cool.

Overall, this is a very good sequel to Pitch black, making just enough conneciton to the first movie while being completely different. Staying true the the word "chronicle", the story does carry on in mutiple parts, making it feel like a cool event in the life of riddick, rather then him fighting Necromongers. Nice pacing and great art design is definetly the first eye catcher, followed by interesting characters to an almost epic plot that fills in holes for Connan (atleast in my mind). And hot women in stylistic costumes ( mostly newton in her courtesean gear) to round out the end for an overall great package.

Wire's NextFest Open Panel

Wired has their NextFest and posted this open panel discussion on their magazine for May. Little old, but i just came across it, bnd it has a lot of interesting discussion between: Rob Glaser (RealNetworks), Yair Landau (Sony Pictures), William Gibson (author), and Ed Zuckerman (TV producer).

They tlak about interetsing topics like why are there less "science fiction" shows? and how advertising effects our generation. Smart bunch, good questions. I suggest a reading.

PSP: Sony's Masa Chatani Interview: Sony Looking for Better LCDs; Phones and Other Dediated PSPs

In other news, Rumors of Ninetnedo's new counsole "the revolution" is the topic of this article. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata states:

...gaming industry is reaching a dead end as its past formula for success - dazzling consumers with more sophisticated imagery - no longer works. Game sales have been declining for years in Japan, and growth has been slowing even in the more solid U.S. market...

It nice how he states that gaming industry needs something new, not better graphics, but a different way to play games. Thus the concepts for DS. Touch screens and dual screens and all. This concept has hope. And i hope that Nintendo will give us another video game leap like they did in the 80s.

Bluetooth & Wireless

Of course we all know that bluetooth and wireless has been the catch phrase for the last few years. Bluetooth, being as old as it is, finally enter the spot light. Now with Bluetooth cellphones and PDAs, every person walking around the streets are basically a small WAN. Now a bluetotth trend starting up is BEDD. This is bascially a setup where u let ur bluetooth phone fine other bluetooth phones around u, and let u meet, socialize, create bigger circle of bluetooth friends.

Also other trends in the home entertainment field invovles more of the ellimination of wires. Such as Wireless speakers from Bose, The Pioneer DCS-525, and Wireless monitors such as the Viewsonic Airpanels.

Of course lets not forget the computer fad pushers of Apple and their brand new Apple Airport Express. A device use to both extend Wireless networks and to beam music to speakers/stereos.

Of course with all this, Bluetooth is still growing. This recent article announces that bluetooth will be even faster by 2005.

Tower of Terror

I just wrote this ride today. it was a typical disney ride, lots of music, lots of atomosphere, and really no substance. the tower is supposely a 1940s hotel for the rich hollywood elites. the story is that something happened, and like 5 people got zapped into the Twlight Zone.

so the hotel has a nice 40s feel, the decoration and the music. throw in some webs and disney cast that talks in a pretenious tone. then the infamous disney line system. surprisingly, California Adventure is not really crowded. so the line was decently short. but disney has designed a even better system where there is a 2nd waiting area with more lines. of course a remake of a twlight zone intro that explains the back story of the tower. of course when u finally get into the ride, buckle down, & stole away ur carryons... u get a cool elevator ride with cool star and door scene, that reseambles the classic twlight zone door in space. then we get some ghostly floors (everytime the elevator door opens, u r on a new floor) images.

of course, there r freefall drops.

a few of them... pretty much as scary as any disney ride. this aint no roller coaster lover's ride. but disney knows how to build ambience. but again, don't make an effort to go ride this in disney. but if u happen to be in Califronia Adventures, its one of them rides that u should go on. of course the best is the California Screaming.

Brilliant Green

During the last week-ish i've been looking up Japanese bands. I found this band today: The Brillian Green. (or this english fan site) A band started in 95' and seems to Alt-Rock. Named one of the top 10 bands out of US by Time. And yes the lead singer Tomoko Kawase is pretty hot. She has a Lisa Lobe/Japanse cute thing going. She is married to the bands Guitarist, Shunsaku Okuda. Ah all the good women are married, all thats left are the ones with issues... But anyways, the band Brilliant Green or "Buri Guri" is cool, they have a buffism speech page, and they are quite the cute people. Kawase has 2 side projects, Tommy Feb 6 and Tommy Heavenly 6. Feb 6 is almost J-pop, while Heavenly 6 is Alt -rock. Tommy, is Kawase single project. Though she is refer to as Tommy and has an unhealthy obession with elmo.

Welcome

Hello to all who's reading this. This is my geenral Hallways BLOG. Of course if you got linked here right now, u must be from the forum. Or who knows how u wandered here. But all are welcome. Mainly this BLOG will be used to list new things i discover online. I keep other BLOGs for personal writings. Here i'll just link to/refer to/direct to other interesting things online.

Since i have been hogging to much of the "daily news" thread in my forum. I figure this will work. I'm quite new in the BLOG world, and i find it fascinating. I mean sure its weird to want people to read about what u write. But i keep those out of the public. Here i'm linking stuff that might be of interest. Well hope to hear some comments. But again, this is just mainly to gather info and post them.
