January 2005 Archives
The Wang has been away doing real work (aka his Job) for the past few days, while recovering from a serious illness (a cold). Thus the crickets chirped quietly on the WWW pages, as I’ve copied and pasted some stuff from last week waiting to post them. Maybe just maybe, a post by post method might work, but too many blogs and too many sites do that alrdy. The Wang only handles large quantities. So, here’s ur daily dose of the iWang -age -y –ish thingy…
Good friend “E" introduce me to the concept of Twixter. Pretty much an article on how adults these days live of their parents, and refuse to become, well, mature adults, “Twixters". While “E" also sent me a nice world labeling of these people.
So after sitting and watching a minor marathon of the new Battle Star Galactica and responding to some blog-ish post today, I came to an odd conclusion about swearing and censorship. Now shows like Galactica and the ever-worshiped Farscape use these pseudo swear words in place of F**K, like frak and frell. Both of these words are used in the same way as fuck on these tv shows. Now I assume this is a clever way to get around censorship, and to bring some culture to these fictional tv worlds, but doesn’t this bypasss the whole point of it? I mean, are we not still teaching our “young" viwers to cuss, just not using what words we consider are cussing? So phrase like I like to have sexual intercourse with ur mother versus I like to fuck ur mother would make one bteer than the other? Simply replacing the a “dirty" word doesn’t really change the purpose of communication. The “Intent" is what we are trying to prevent people from learning when we censor TV is it not? By teaching another word like frak is no different? So we can hear kids att he schoolyards shouting, “Frak you u Son of a Bittle!" I guess that’s not to bad… or is it?

Sure, Newsweek just rub it in…
Midnighteye slams us with the ubber Best of Japanese 2004 films list. Each critic gives their best of, plus their choice for non-Japanese films. A good place to scrounge for what to rent at Cinefile and a overall list of some nice films. Midnight Eye in general is a great Asian film site that writes some intriguing critiques and nice articles about the whole Asian film market.

Well, today will be a fast and short day, as the Wang is sick. Must have been of that drinking this last past weekend, or maybe its just the cold returning to SoCal like a stealthy ninja on telephone lines. Anyways, feeling sick and having actually work to do, makes today a short day, so we go with the fast, fire-and-forget posting style.
First up, the Japanese invented something called “Nipple Enhancer"

MTV gives us this nice list of the top 20 videos of 2004. I don’t usually agree with the MTV pop-taste of music, but it’s a ncie way to see some videos.
The SF Chronicle tells us to have a crappy band name, cause good band names never become famous.

Askmen bring us their 2005’s 99 Most desirable women list. I cant say I agree with much of it, I would never put Belluci anywhere near the double digit area, she would a be a close 135 in my book. But it sa nice place to see a list of hott women. AskMen does seem to sway towards the fashion model and actress area… is AskMen a metrosexual magazine? Or is just plan gay? This is an odd disocvery via BoingBoing. This link is to a “Betelnut" page. The betel nut is some sort of Palm tree looking plant, that produces a nut, I ‘m guessing Betel plant, and mixed with some sort of chew tobacco type of concoction. This is quite famous amongst the Taiwanese. In the recent years, the Betel Nut stands have turned into a cheap whore house look parading young beautiful girls selling the nuts. Sometimes they are know as “Betel Nut Beauties." I always assume this was just a scenery of Taiwan. I’ve never tried one of these nut things personally, they r rated close to cigarettes, and can only be bought by 18+ users. They also produce some nasty looking teeth and odor. But this page does give u a nice look into the Betel nut setup. Also mostly these Betel Nut girls are usually quite “owned" by their bosses, whom usually deal with the Taiwanese mafia, which always reminds me of British hoodlums.

BoingBoing notifies us of this EFF Endangered Gizmo List. This list list out some of the famous techs that are taken out by Large Hollywood/RIAA types. This include things like the ReaplyTV 400 series, Napster and DVD X-copy. It also mentions the Induce Act once more and how it threatens current devices like iPods and CD-RW. The EFF also goes out to defend future techs, since these big industries have bought and lobbied their way into setting up an environment that prevents future gizmos.

Terra Nova talks of the true connection between Thottbot.com and The Cosmos interface. If u r not a World of Warcraft fan, then u probably don’t know what the Wang is talking about. WoW, a MMO from Blizzard allows the users to manipulate the UI via XML scripting. Now Cosmos was nice enough to create a program that allows non-programmers to create and modify their own UI. Thottbot.com is a website dedicated to MMO information, listing quests, NPCs, drop rates, crafting plans, and general forums for WoW. Now the ingenuity of these two is that the Cosmos interface CAN send information directly from a play’s UI to the databases of Thottbot. Information can be created as soon as a player 1st access it. Terra Nova explains that the future of information is management.

Geek out with this Vader Mask and Voice changer!~

And we end the day wishing wafer-thin Mischa a happy “legality+1" birthday.
Today the iWang continues from a long series of talk about the recent TV shows of interest on other blogs of note, and start with this bit of info. The Museum of TV and Radio in LA is having a TV fest, organized by shows. The 2005 William S. Paley Television Festival Will take place through out 3/2/05-3/16/05. With important shows such as Deadwood and Lost having their entire cast at these panels. SO for u lost fans, mark u r calendars for Sat. March 12 @ 7p. Cause EJ will be there… is this something worthy to miss a game for?

Alright short day, backs to works.
This might be another relatively slow week as the Wang, no officially renamed to be the iWang needs to catch up on work stuff. Month of slacking has force results on my “work" to be, well completed. Thus juggling the multiple task that the iWang has in a day (e.g. Video games, sleep, food…) the iWang needs to go into “shuffle" mode and spend sometime on work. So today will be another light does day.
First off I like to introduce all u movie buffs onto the following blog. This is Greencines, Greencine Daily. It’s a ncie blog about all things movie, leaning towards the indies. So give a browse once in awhile, as Greencine still holds up its indie roots, and stays true, in the sea of mail-to-rent DVD super giants.

Move over movie industry… the Gaming industry just made a whopping 9.9billion dollars in 2004. This is definetly going to make the big business put their business foot in the gaming industry more and more. Thus expect more movie tie-ins, sequels, star cameos, and craptastic games. We have to thanks these numbers to big money maker games such as Halo 2, and GTA: San Andreas.

Livejournal is dead today. Atleast this is what their site says:
Our data center (Internap) lost all its power, including redundant backup power, for some unknown reason. (unknown to me, at least) We're currently dealing with bringing our 100+ servers back online. Not fun. We're not happy about this. Sorry... :-/ More details later.
Bring 5.5 million bloggers to their withdraw-knees and lamentations. I think it’s the work of some malicious MSN spaces employed hacker out to dethrone the Six Apart/LiveJournal giant.
UPDATE
Update #1, 7:35 pm PST: we're up on 'dirty' power for now (it works, but it's unreliable), and we're working to assess the state of the databases. The worst thing we could do right now is rush the site up in an unreliable state. We're checking all the hardware and data, making sure everything's consistent. Where it's not, we'll be restoring from recent backups and replaying all the changes since that time, to get to the current point in time, but in good shape. We'll be providing more technical details later, for those curious, on the power failure (when we learn more), the database details, and the recovery process. For now, please be patient. We'll be working all weekend on this if we have to.

On the new iPod Shuffle craze, here’s the new Shuffle Ads
As my talk with Noble_zone I introduce him to some other small wearable MP3 players like the EMP-Z II Plus or the iRiver N10. Both are small and wearable. But more expansive because they actually have LCDs. The N10 actually uses an OLED screen. Both only have max size of 512 Mb and more expansive for the smaller size.
With the iPod Shuffle, Apple really embraced the whole random music mentality, with this “shuffle" concept. They took the production value off with out a display, but turn the whole thing into a media culture. EnGadget gives a review on the Shuffle. The thing that interested me the most is the “Auto-Fill" feature in the new iTune. This will randomly place songs into ur Shuffle, so the whole experience can be very very random. But this cuts into my original complaint, that if I do find one of these random songs interesting… how do I know what it is called?
And for those of us who have an iPod alrdy, here r 3 easy steps to convert ur Full iPod into a Shuffle.

Due to CEs, there are lots of tech/gadget news. Feel free to browser EnGadget or Gizmodo. Or try using any of the big tech news sites like Cnet and ZDnews. But I have compiled a few things below that strike great interest for me.
-DVR are the talk of CES. DirectTV is doing their own DVR, finally breaking from TiVo. While TiVo gets the Microsoft reach-around and continues to pimp the TiVoToGo. Not to forget, DTV getting their new Home server Media Center. And an overall trend for DVRs to go HD/Media Center-ish.
-Memory Sticks gets bigger while CF gets faster.
-XM Radio devices goes crazy portable, as Sirus sneaks in for the metal suit case!
-Samsung for the 80in. LCDs, this weird detachable 5.1speaker thing., and really really small cameras that the Japanese will love.
-Overall much of the CES news seems to be dominated by MP3 player, PMP, GPS devices, LCDs, HD tvs, and storage media.
-From the video game front, IGN covers CES.
-CNET sits down with Mr. Gates, as he dodges around the Xbox 2 topic.
In other tech news, here’s a story about a Holographic storage medium, that suppose to store 1.6 Tb. ( yes terabyte ).

The concept is that too many people view Wikipeidia as a credible source, though fact-check frequently it is created by users and input by anyone. Buy Clay compares Wikipedia to Britannica and states this quote:
"new media don't succeed because they're like the old media, only better: they succeed because they're worse than the old media at the stuff the old media is good at, and better at the stuff the old media are bad at."

Cool wushu staff versus 3 segment staff fight. Looks old or it could be the “modern" PAL system.
If u like Megaman of have a lot of free time, take a gander at this Megaman version of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody.
In regards to Noble_zone’s post about the world’s tallest bridge, here’s some Satellite shots.

A very LONG but cool essay on the big computing platforms of date, written by Neal Stephenson, called "In the Beginning was the Command Line“. I’m only a bit into it, but it has some cool concepts about Apple, Microsoft, Linux and others. This link is actually to an annotated, updated version of the essay to catch it up to the modern day, 5 years later by one Garrett Birkel. Good read if u r really into the history of computers and operating systems. Plus this guy is old school, has a character sheet of himself in some sort of Wizardry PC game from the late 80s on his website.

The Best of Photo Journalism of 2004 3rd place winner in the Feature Picture Story category is Mark Zaleski. His Entry consist of photos for Riverside County. Most of his 3rd place entry consist of the Riverside Corner’s office, pretty morbid stuff. But some really good photos. The above is my favorite. Another recommended entry by BoingBoing is David Hoegsholts entry of the Prostitutes of Copenhagen.
PC world brings us the big news today, the new that we are all waiting for… ok maybe I’ve been waiting for, pictures of cool stuff from the CES 2005. But EnGadget has a motherload of info on CES today… made my Engadget RSS feed window uber-scrollable.

There will probably be no Xbox 2 announcement at CES.

This article drops 2004 MMO names the likes of god has not seen. And then proceeds to bust out more MMO acronyms for 2005. Get a big year’s end review of this year in MMO, and what’s to come.

Speaking of which, RPGDot gives us this big list of PC RPGs to look forward to in 2005. Not to mention part II coming tomorrow.

Well I’m out for the day… cya all later!
Welcome back from the fun-filled vacations. The Wang was quite mellow-out during the whole xmas/new year period. Due to a Office Mandate, I had 9 days off. Thus, I stayed home a lot, saw some movies, and played a lot of Video games. But anyways, let the interesting stuff begin.
First off, I come back and logon to Trillian and it notifies me of a new version. The New version 3. I’m always hesitant for the Trillian numbering system since only their “PRO" version goes by real numbers, while the free one has always lingered in some beta 0.73 kind of setup. But to my surprise, the new Version 3 basic is free. And I must say, it’s a very nice upgrade. Off course including all the new features of the newer MSN and Yahoo messenger, Trillian goes into a plug-in mode, where each service is a plug-in. Thus future IM services can be easily added. New looks and management makes the new trillion flashy and user-friendly. Additional features include spell checker and Wikipedia links, right on the message windows. Not to mention the Pro version can install a Rendezvous plugin that allows “server-less" IM. This is something that Noble_zone has been looking for his gaming ways. Also the “tab" theory of Firefox/Netscape browsers has been added to manage multiple pages and chat windows. Lots of good stuff. I give a big approval for the new upgrade.
U can find the download link here.
And the a link the Cerulean Studios, that makes Trilllian.

BBC does this cool article on Americans and Blogs. Stating that high rise of blogs are due to the poltical events of this year, and the blogs that commented on them. Also the article points out that most people like to read rather write their own blogs. Another BBC article talks about the word “dooced". Which pseudo means getting fired because of something u blogged.

So Feel the Magic is big on the Nintendo DS. Rub it!
UPDATE: And if u can read Japanese, here’s a site dedicated to the Rub it song, and anything techno-dance track. Lots of Flash animations with the Rub It song, and lots of DDR music. Plus some weird video clips that I don’t recommend. But here are some nice SWFs: here, here, here, and here

Wired gives us the Best Games that we missed of 2004. There is again another mention of Katamari Damacy
Another cool wired article about the darkside of the interenet used in Pirating. The article does talk about cool techniques that people use, that sounds right out of some sci-fi movie. But apparently these are the real-trick of the trade of the hackers and piraters. Techniques and structures used by hackers are like a giant corporation, well oiled and each position has a duty in the bigger scheme of things. Also the article talks about what the government is doing to battle this.
